L'apprenti sorcier

French politics again Anijo and you may not know what the issue is all about.

But this film by Disney perfectly represents how Sarkozy is perceived by a huge majority of the French, even those who voted for him 3 years ago.

A turd who would set the country on fire just to be elected again in 2012.

The guy is loathed by something like 75% of the French even if half of them would vote him again in.

Our turn to have a G.W.Bush at the helm... What comes around goes around as we all know (sigh)

That's exactly what I was criticizing in the first paragraph, waiting for Drancy and le Vel d'Hiv to be mentioned.

I won't do it again Ned... I promise.

Iznogoud,

Eh bien voilà, I saw it coming...

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

L'un d'entre eux a été tué en juillet dernier by the police after he burglarised a house and the whole community came and randsacked a whole town in province.

Sarko seized the opportunity to flex his muscles and made an over generalisation, associating foreigners to delinquancy. Hence a heated debate running now in France.

It doesn't surprise me. Regarding this whole Roms topic, I'm not about to bite the bait (?) and consider they're all poor victims of France, Romania, Germany, Italy etc.

It is said they're discriminated in their countries (mainly Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia) which is probably true but many ask the question: Are they discriminated because people don't want them to integrate or are they discriminated because they don't want to integrate?

I'll soon write a post about them.

That was a long time ago. Now, Romania and Bulgaria let all their poor people emmigrate to West European countries.

Also there are problems of graft and corruption in these countries all too happy to receive money from the UE but many wonder where does that money go...

This situation is not all that different from what is discussed in the U.S. as concerns the Mexican immigrants. As i like to say ;) it is not all black and white. To some extent the Mexican immigrants (even those here illegally) contribute to the overall cultural and economic benefit of everyone and yet on the other hand they pose some problems. Thus it is with dealing with the disenfranchised of this world that we live in.

The Gitanes who I met (not really in Marseille but in a nearby village, Auribeau sur Siagne) were clearly not of French origin as my poor French was somewhat better than theirs was, which tells you how poor their ability to speak French was! lol. They would work here and there on and off and would steal anything given the opportunity. My girlfriend liked them for, as you indicated, romantic bohemian reasons, and her parents had reason to be concerned about her hanging out with them. As for me, as a young foreign exchange student, I found the entire situation quite amusing and enjoyable.

Flocon a dit…

"To some extent the Mexican immigrants (even those here illegally) contribute to the overall cultural and economic benefit of everyone"

The difference is that the Roms don't work at all and contribute to absolutely nothing be it in France, Germany, Italy etc.

Through the French, German, Italian States it's all at the expenses of the tax-payers.

Culturally speaking they bring nothing positive with them but nuisances and disturbances.

It's not that I blame them but the countries where they come from.

Here in France, they live in slums and nowhere else but miserable slums. It is not a viable option to let them stay where they find shelters with their children in total unhealthy conditions.

European treaties gives other Europeans the right to travel to any country and for Roms (gypsies) to stay in said country more than trhee months provided they work and have a permanent home.

As a matter of fact Sarkozy is just making the law being applied but it should not be the President de la république who should deal with this issue in the first place. And not the way he does.

Dito in France safe that the very person of Sarkozy is loathed by a large majority of the French.

When Obama was elected he brought with him great hopes for a better future for the US in particular the Iraki and afgani wars... Alas...

But here in France, even if Sarko is ousted in 2012 nobofy has muxh expectation for a better future. What a bleak prospect we have...

Ned Ludd a dit…

Flocon, you make many of the points that I would make. Sarko's policy won't really affect French Society. But somehow not all of the Rom seem to live in squalor. There are a few privileged ones who seem to be the "caïds". Here is a comment I made at SF:

Roms or Gitans or Tziganes, apparently 90% are French on French territory. So this policy is just a smoke screen by Sarko trying to show he is tough on...I don't know what.

However, I do get upset or even angry when on school days I see some of their children sitting in the street begging and several times I have seen an adult man roll up in a new mercedes or other such car to talk to them, apparently giving instructions. There is clearly something going on.

I also noticed that recently when some French ones maybe blocked a bridge in Bordeaux all I saw were new, even brand new, camping cars and trailers. So where does the money come from? Are they ever subject to fiscal controls on their incomes?

So I have mixed feelings about them. It seems to me that they are also racist, meaning they think people not of their community are to be exploited. If this thread continues, I might give some examples.

Flocon a dit…

Ned,

"Roms or Gitans or Tziganes, apparently 90% are French on French territory"

I think you are mistaking Roms, Gypsies, Tziganes who are not French with les Gens du voyage who are French citizens.

Clearly the distinction seems rather murky even for the French since I suppose a certain number of those being called Gens du voyage may well have Romanian ancestry.

Those you refer to who blockaded this bridge in Bordeaux weren't Roms or Gypsies or Tziganes but French "Gens du Voyage".

"It seems to me that they are also racist, meaning they think people not of their community are to be exploited."

This is what I perceived through Anijo's personal experience.

I'll write a post tomorrow on les Gens du voyage.

Anonyme a dit…

Bernarda is Ned. I had no idea. In retrospect it makes sense..

Anonyme a dit…

Perhaps if we were discussing monoculture and genetic engineering I might have noticed. ;)

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

I've always known you were a smart customer (une fine mouche) [(and not a slim fly ;-)]

Ned introduced herself as Bernarda from SF on the very first comment she posted on Shall We Talk back in October 2007.

We all have this possibility to change our alias depending on the sites, blogs, forums where we participate.

I'm supposed to be Michel Krakow on FC and Alain somewhere else.

ZapPow isn't just ZapPow like Anijo isn't la petite Américaine de chez SF.

Maybe merbel is someone else somewhere else, who knows but her?

Anyway, seule une fine mouche could have lift the veil... :D

Flocon a dit…

Come to think again, I understand Ned gave you the ultimate clue with her reference to a comment she left at SF's.

I didn't find her comment (I admit I didn't try hard since I already had read) but you did and then you just lickety-split put 2 and 2 together, you smart one!

Anonyme a dit…

Flocon,

Perhaps I shall use the alias "skinny fly" one of these days.. :)

P.S. Autumn Leaves, Miles Davis.. lovely

Flocon a dit…

I shouldn't post too early in the morning.

A "sharp customer" and not a smart one (if I believe my dictionary).

And lifted the veil of course instead of lift... grrrr!

That's what I deserve...

Anijo, I only changed my pseudo because I had trouble registering my other one this site.

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

My dictionary tells me that vixen means altogether a she-fox and a shrew...

Why not use the French version where there's no such ambiguity as another alias on the Internet?

You would have everyone wonders: Who might she be?

I wish I could master the know-how well enough in order to make one single video recording of the six parts of "La petite Renarde rusée".

Flocon a dit…

Regarding Ned's participation to the blog, I've retrieved this exchange which became heated (with Ned in the role of the usual suspect...).

No other heated exchange ever took place on Shall We Talk since then ;-)

And who was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea? Yours faithfully...

Not always an easy task to intervene and suggest to participants to chill out...

(I understand "to chill out" as a synonym of "to cool down")
