Stunning!

Dominique Strauss Kahn's reputation as a sex maniac is no secret in France but what happened last night in New-York is stunningly bizarre.

Even if the man seems to have a hard time keeping his testosterone under control it's a bit difficult to believe he could be as stupid as to let his sex instincts take the upper hand over his intelligence in the situation he is engaged regarding the current French political scene and another "incident" at the beginning of his tenure as Managing Director at the IMF.

Many people, both in the French and the American press, mention the possibility of a setup by his political opponents at home. I also have a hard time believing that line.

Even if he were to be cleared of the charges that are held against him (which seems highly improbable for now) I can't figure how he can go on in politics, notwithstanding his position at the IMF.

Although he now can't even dream of the next presidential elections in France, I'm not that sure that this episode is a major plus for Sarkozy. It may likely play more in favor of François Hollande, one of the socialist candidates for next year elections.

But then again, in politics you can never tell.

The French generally speaking don't care about mistresses and lovers but a sex maniac is a horse of a different color.

Wait until we have more information and let's not forget: innocent until proven guilty.

There is this article dealing with the possibility of a set-up based on the early tweet of Jonathan Pinet.

Some of the French posters have some 'interesting' responses such as these two.

You're hyper reactiv Anijo! I hadn't seen the article you link to.

Some others do also.

By the way, the French comment you selected speaks of "obus". I suppose you guessed the meaning of "obus"?

Flocon a dit…

Christine Boutin is a very well known figure of rightist bigot in France (she's also a crook as I wrote in a post last year.

And what's more, you found it!!!

ZapPow a dit…

On verra bien. Ou on ne verra rien.

ZapPow a dit…

By the way, the French comment you selected speaks of "obus". I suppose you guessed the meaning of "obus"?

Flocon, I could only guess that this meant something along the lines of being bombed by artillery shells is okay? I'm not sure though.

Flocon a dit…

ZapPow,

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

Obus = hooters!

C'est intéressant. Hooters refers to a certain action of the hand whereas obus refers to the shape of the object.

Here is an example.

Obus is a familiar word (not particularly vulgar) for booby.

- Cette fille a de ces obus!

This does remind me of Bill Clinton...

Anonyme a dit…

Obus = Hooters! Did I even translate that line incorrectly! lol...

I had looked up "obus" and found this:

Hooters refers to a certain action of the hand

Sorry, Flocon, but I have no idea what this means... I thought that hooters were car horns, a big nose, or a woman's boobies.

Hmmmm... Why am I embarassed here?

As far as I know, hooters were car horns at the beginning of the XXth century when said horns were pear-shaped and had to be pressed in order to emit a sound.

Need I say more?

Flocon a dit…

Exerpt from this article in the NYT:

In any event, Mr. Sarkozy may not benefit, political analysts say. Over 60 percent of French voters do not want the president to run again in next year’s race, recent polls show. Francois Hollande, a former chief of the Socialist party, has been steadily rising in opinion polls, in part because his down-to-earth image contrasts with the more flamboyant Mr. Sarkozy and Mr. Strauss-Kahn

And also,

Unlike American and British voters, the French are also traditionally indifferent about the extra-marital affairs and sexual escapades of their leaders, he said.

“People knew that he had mistresses//...// All our presidents have too -- that’s part of political life and it doesn’t bother the French.”

If accusations of sexual assault were confirmed, that would be different.

Anonyme a dit…

Need I say more?

ohhhhh.... It took me awhile. I almost gave up attempting to understand what you were trying to say and then it dawned on me. I had no idea that this was the etymology of that particular definition of hooters. The things I learn on Shall We Talk, lol..

A pro-palestinian demo taking place where you live. I can't quite imagine the same thing happening outside my windows... Everytime I have been to Paris, I've encountered some kind of demonstration for one thing or another. The streets are so lively and active there.

I found an interesting blog by DSK's wife, Anne Sinclair.

Flocon a dit…

Re hooters you're old enough to know better Anijo ;-) so you may have learned that men don't consider breasts the way women do.

The etymology isn't precisely scientific since I figured it out but my guess is that all men the world around would come to the same conclusion as to the relation between car horns and boobies :-D

Just ask D. Strauss Kahn !

Speaking of him, his wife is also very well known in France since she was a TV anchor more than 25 years ago. Did you know she was born in New-York?

Interesting exchange from LeMonde live:

Anonyme a dit…

Per the NYT blog

Gilles Savary, a member of the European Parliament who belongs to Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s Socialist Party, wrote on his blog that the arrest of Mr. Strauss-Kahn had hints of American-style hypocrisy. “Everyone knows that Dominique Strauss-Kahn is a libertine, and that he is distinguished from others by the fact that he doesn’t try and hide it,” he wrote. “In puritanical American, infiltrated by rigorous Protestantism, financial misdeeds are far more tolerated than pleasures of the flesh.”

And yet, what about Bernie Madoff?

This affair of DSK is bringing out a lot of comments from some of the French about how puritanical the Americans are...

Flocon a dit…

"This affair of DSK is bringing out a lot of comments from some of the French about how puritanical the Americans are..."

Aren't many of them? And is it disrespectful to mention puritanism?

It's like saying Americans are very religious people. Well, an enormous portion of them are like an enormous portion of Europeans aren't.

Some years ago a woman magazine published an issue with a mother breastfeeding her child on its cover. I sort of remember this caused some discomfort among many subscribers and readers.

And yet are the Poles devout catholics!

Anonyme a dit…

Aye. Now I know how puritanical and religious that I am.. ô-Ô^

Is it disrespectful to say many of the things about the French which apply to many of the French? You are, I'm sure, aware of which things I speak of.

Some years ago SuperFrenchie published a post by me which mentioned the 'mother breastfeeding her child' and re le zizi. Remember?

I know personally quite a few French people who are more puritanical than I am.... oh, yes, they are. Perhaps not as innocent ☺, but yes, definitively more puritanical.

Anonyme a dit…

This French invocation of American Puritanism is risible. Are they really arguing that a criminal charge and an arrest of the accused are a disproportionate, Puritanical response to a plausible claim of rape by an adult woman who appears to be sane? Are we to believe that French police would have allowed Bernacke to fly away from Paris if an adult Frenchwoman went to them with a plausible claim that he had raped her in an hotel? Absurd. And the conspiracy theories! Oh my! The CIA set DSK up to ensure Sarkozy's re-election so that French troops would stay in Afghanistan! This is all very revealing. And I do not mean revealing about American sexual Puritanism.

Anijo may I discreetly suggest you should have a look here.

OK, you win, I concede that Americans are not puritan and that there's no puritanism in the U.S and some French are wrong to bring up that issue :-D

I remember your Zizi post at SF and here it is (published just before one of mines) which adressed the issue of American puritanism with several examples.

I didn't remember the Baby Talk issue from your post. Maybe was it a subliminal souvenir of simply that this cover and the ensuing controversy was reported in France (and in Europe and the whole world for that matter) like was the Janet Jackson dress malfunction.

There's even a Wiki entry about that!

Flocon a dit…

SemperFidelis,

As pertains to American puritanism see my above answer to Anijo.

"Are they really arguing that a criminal charge and an arrest of the accused are a disproportionate, Puritanical response to a plausible claim of rape by an adult woman who appears to be sane?"

I don't think "they" (who?) do.

"Are we to believe that French police would have allowed Bernacke to fly away from Paris if an adult Frenchwoman went to them with a plausible claim that he had raped her in an hotel?"

No. It happened some years ago to a famous American actor whose name I currently can't remember (de Niro?) He was assigned to stay in Paris for some days until the judge decided to drop the case (he was suspected of beneficiting the service of a prostitutes ring).

And now de Niro presides the Cannes festival this year. Isn't that revealing?

Trust your judiciary system all you want, I certainly don't trust the French one.

"And the conspiracy theories! Oh my! The CIA set DSK up to ensure Sarkozy's re-election so that French troops would stay in Afghanistan!"

I take liberty to link to this readers' section page of the NYT where the most recommended comments suggesting it was a setup are written by people living in Brooklyn and N.M (French in disguise?).

Your CIA/Sarkozy/Afghanistan is entertaining though I didn't read anything like that anywhere but here. I understand you exagerated your point for the sake of your argument.

"This is all revealing". Like in it speaks volume?

Revealing of what? A French conspiracy to have Obama reelected next year?

Speaking of Bernanke, should something similar happen as you suggest, what would be the reactions in the U.S? Both in the media and among the populace?

Would there be no suspiscion of a setup by the French who are well known for their unbridled sexuality, who are pathologically anti American so that it's very likely that they would have masterminded a plot in order to humiliate America etc. ?

Here is another page in this morning edition of the NYT where a certain Vince Boston from CA writes an amusing comment (or maybe not) mimicking the French accent and denounciating the... Well, see by yourself.

This comment was the most recommanded one by the NTY readers.

Isn't that revealing mon ami's?

One must not get carried away by ignorance, prejudice and bad faith.

Well, I can see you're still on the watch when it comes to Franco-american relations :-P and it's OK with me.

Another Francophile in his work.

"This fool's mistake was here in the USA women assert their rights under the law. Amazingly quaint concept to the French I am sure, and a non-existent concept to the muslims."

Sure. And Montesquieu was American. How about francophobia? And she is sure of what she writes!

"Isn't womanizing treated as a political plus in France?"

Yeah, sure.

"In the 2011 Oscar-winning "Inside Job" Strauss-Kahn was very critical of the Wall Street practices. On February 11, 2011 IMF recommended replacement of the US dollar as reserve currency. On May 14, 2011 just before leaving for Europe IMF president is accused of attempted rape and is replaced by a former JP Morgan executive.

Just connect the dots...."

"I really find it hard to believe that he would have assaulted a hotel maid. I am sure there are many people who have a lot to gain from his downfall."

(Judy NY)

"I'm not a big conspiracy theorist but watch the documentary "Inside Job" by Charles Ferguson if you want to see how Wall Street will not tolerate any U.S., World Bank or IMF official looking to reign them in, especially smart, powerful opponents like Eliot Spitzer and Strauss-Kahn. They find their weakness- usually sex-- and depose them that way. I don't trust any of this and believe it was a set-up too"

(Kari, Washington DC)

All American opinions in the most respected American newspaper. So which is which?

Flocon a dit…

The WAPO has a lot of comments on this affair too of course.

Excerpts:

"Maybe you didn't hear - he was French.......anymore explanations needed?"

"He was favored to win the presidency of France; now he is a shoo-in. If he had raped, say, fifty women, they'd make him Emperor."

"Maybe the whole matter was just a cultural misunderstanding. French hotels don't have the same type of maid service. He probably thought the woman was in his room for a little fun."

"The IMF chose a socialist Frenchman to be their head.....does one need to know anymore to think th eIMF is worthless?"

"Grenouille. Salaud."

(This one is bilingual)

"Have the French descended to that level!!"

"Another filthy frog!"

On and on and on...

I had no idea the Wapo shared its readership with the New York Daily Post.

Needless to say, most of the comments take for granted that Strauss Kahn is culprit. Why bother with a trial?

Yet I thought that America was proud of her innoncent until proven guilty motto.

"I don't think "they" (who?) do."

Who? The French posters whose comments I posted and of whom we speak of here. You remember, these two:

So the question from Semperfi is not a matter of some Americans being puritanical, but what does some Americans being puritanical have to do with "a plausible claim of rape by an adult woman who appears to be sane"?

Anonyme a dit…

Anijo: Exactly. Since we are of one accord that American sexual Puritanism (conceded here for the sake of argument)did not lead to a peculiarly American result for DSK (since we are also of one accord that, given the same facts, the French police would have certainly seized Bernacke and carried him away from his First Class seat on an American Airways flight from Paris), the question before us is: What motivated the French posters to bring up American Puritanism? Why did they think it was relevant?

I've been reading comments from Le Monde and the NYT. This affair has the French and Americans at each others throats and it's getting ugly. So this will be my last comment re DSK.

Ned Ludd a dit…

Ned Ludd a dit…

Anonyme a dit…

Flocon a dit…

Ned,

Despair.

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

"this will be my last comment re DSK."

The answer would be a resounding NO! à 80% minimum.

The ruling elite prefers the masses not to tell it how much they distrust it.

Ned Ludd a dit…

Flocon a dit…

The less one knows the less one is prone to criticize. Again, the slaves in Plato's cave come to mind.

What is there to criticize when one knows nothing and is thus ignorant of his own ignorance?

And since I'm back to Platon these days...

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

Those in France who are shocked don't plead that the French judiciary system would be any better than the American one (the French's appreciation of their national système judiciaire doit être inférieur à 10 %) mais sont choqués par la brutalité du traitement infligé à DSK qui est supposé innocent.

Ned Ludd a dit…

More and more it looks like DSK is in serious trouble. There seems to be a self-destructive streak in him.

It would be an interesting psychological study to try to understand why this rich, very well paid man would take any of the risks attributed to him.

One thing, apparently he did not want to run for president and thus imploded.

Flocon a dit…

Ned,

Your suggestion is exactly the one a psychoanalyst made in the day before yesterday in Le Monde.
