Your new pic looks very good!

I've had a boring day waiting for the plumbers, and they've been here for quite some time now...

But no one will ever see these plumbers exactly the way that I do and I should appreciate that! :-D

Flocon a dit…

The pic was taken Friday last week in the Parc de La Villette on the bridge over the canal where this other picture was taken (not by me).

It was a glorious day, blue sky and mild temperature with a café on the terrasse of this Café de la Musique (here in winter last year).

"But no one will ever see these plumbers exactly the way that I do"

A once in a lifetime experience indeed!

When you link to things such as you did, it makes me think of the many aspects of Paris I have yet to experience.

I am going to spend some time this morning exploring virtually Cité des Sciences

I went to an exposition there one time, but never went to the Parc de la Villette nor did I see the rest of the Cité.

Flocon, you are very lucky to have all of these cultural venues at your fingertips.

What suprises me is how little of Paris some Parisians have seen. (Which brings to mind the post that you deleted re Toqueville and how much Americans know about him). Yes, I already saw it! ☺

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

-----------------

What suprises me is how little of Paris some Parisians have seen."

Yes!

Incroyable!

Anonyme a dit…

Flocon,
Re Le Parc de Bercy. Quelle beauté !

Je n'y suis jamais allée. :(

The last time that I went to Paris I stayed with a friend of mine and his wife and kids for a few days.. They were not at all like most of the other people in France who I know. They didn't drink wine, they didn't have any good cheese, and the cuisine was awful. And they never went into Paris (they lived in a banlieu). Suffice it to say that I decided to stay in a hotel after a few boring days staying there.

Flocon a dit…

Superbe diaporama Anijo!

La photo n°4 est celle du Palais omnisport de Paris construit i y a 25 ans when Chirac was mayor of Paris.

A $100 Weekend in Paris

And one guy seized the opportunity to rant about France (and presumably the French):

"You cannot use the Velib bikes unless you have a EU chip in your credit card. These bikes are not "tourist friendly" for Americans. Is this a surprise to anybody visiting France?"

I have a yearly pass for Vélib' which I use at least twice a day. I rode to la Villette with a Vélib' the other day.

It cost 29 € per year (State nany yurpin system, ajthough it's run by a private company) and one can use it round the clock 365 days per year!

Christine a dit…

Flocon,

Flocon a dit…

Christine,

Anonyme a dit…

And one guy seized the opportunity to rant about France (and presumably the French):

Yeah, well, he's an idiot. Another guy responded thusly:
Actually, you may use an American Express card for Velib. I happen to have had one with me in 2009 and it worked, and Velib is a dream for getting around Paris. And I don't know what Steve is talking about regarding France not being friendly to Americans. Every time I've been the French have treated me like gold.

Flocon a dit…

Was denkt Ihr?

What is interesting about this illusion is that it is an interesting demonstration of the dichotomy of what is reality, similar to the wave/partical duality.

Anonyme a dit…

Does she spin clockwise or counterclockwise? Both. Wave and/or particle. It's a matter of relativity.

Flocon a dit…

I read the article just before going early to bed.

90% of the times I see the dancer spinning clockwise and then, suddenly she goes counterclockwise.

A two dimentional image in an apparently three dimentional frame.

Just for the sake of it, it refers to husserlian phenomenology and particularly the concept of intentionality.

This concept bears large consequences such as in esthetic for example.

The question of interpretation of art with regard to the producer's intentions has been the subject of much debate. The traditional, commonsense view that the key to understanding works of art can be located in the intentions of the author, has been critiqued convincingly by authors such as Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault who emphasise the active role of the viewer/reader in creating meaning in visual and written texts

Think of your paintings such as the one with the two bottles and the lezard. You intended to express some specific feelings in it but the viewer projects his/her own a priori cultural set of perceptions and feelings in it.

Each image is seen differently by each onlooker. No picture has its own definitive meaning attached to it. It all depends on each spectator's intentionality.

As seen before, a bird never sings twice the same song.

But I'm not familiar at all with phenomenology.

Flocon,

I have yet to relate to an article about some other person's experiences in Paris. And the majority of comments about the article are usually of little interest.

I've met a number of different people who live in Paris and they are all so different, one from the other, and different parts of Paris are so different, one from the other, that I couldn't even begin to make any overall conclusions about the people or the city. Also, everytime that I've gone there, I have an entirely different experience.

I do not return with a lot of memories re different restaurants, although I do have some nice memories about enjoying a few meals here and there. Yes, of course the food was good and different, but that is not my main reason for traveling to France.

I'll have to take some pictures of some of my pictures to France to show you.

Flocon a dit…

Mais après l'avoir lu intièrement I realized it was another New Yorker socialite writing for her socialite friends back home.

Definitively not my thing.

"I have yet to relate to an article about some other person's experiences in Paris."

Il y a 6 ans bientôt je fréquentais ce blog tenu par une Américaine (obviously not living on a shoestring) qui est restée un an à Paris with her hubby and three children.

Elle écrivait tous les jours des billets très intéressants without indulging in the usual clichés.

Mind you, this is where I first met l'Amerloque before he arrived at SF's!

I don't remember we had exchanges though.

You get an A+ Flocon.

It's sad that the Samaritaine has changed and even worse I read that it is now closed. At the time I was there the rooftop had white plastic tables, a casual atomosphere and it wasn't very crowded. One would order food at a counter. There were no waiters. When I returned another year, it had been converted into an expensive restaurant and wasn't fully open to the air anymore.

And yes, at the foot of St Eustache, it was this famous restaurant

Thank you for your generous compliments. The pictures were taken by my ex. The Frenchmen do enjoy flirting. I got more attention from men there in Paris than I do back home.

Anonyme a dit…

I must see Midnight in Paris! I was surprised to see Carla Bruni in the trailer.

Flocon a dit…

La samaritaine as a department store has closed in 2005 indeed but should reopen around 2013 as a luxury hotel (More info available on the French article).

I went on the roof in the winter of 1999 and couldn't enjoy the view since it was pitch dark at 7 pm.

------------

---------

Sarko went to see Bruni on the setting of the film and, as usual, the sick man got into a tantrum for whatever reason.

Anijo you have no idea how much 80% of the French are longing after next year presidential election to get rid of bling bling...

--------

As Mark used to say: context, context, context explains everything.

When Americans ear socialism, many of them think Staline or North-Korea.

To Europeans, socialism means opposition to unbridled capitalism.

Well, nothing that you don't already know, n'est-ce pas?

Flocon a dit…

re Paris at night.

En 1968 une chanson a connu un succès extraordinaire en France, Il est 5 heures, Paris s'éveille sung and composed by Jacques Dutronc who's been Françoise Hardy's compagnon for 45 odd years.

The lyrics aren't interesting but the melody is fine and the flute improvisation line probably accounted for 50% of the success of this song.

I was 16... Oh my...

Paris by night, regagne les cars

Anonyme a dit…

Flocon,
That is one good shot of Notre Dame. I would have guessed that it was taken by a professional photographer. You were in a good position relative to your subject. I like the night sky with some dark clouds. The reflections in the water are beautiful.

Flocon a dit…

Another pic I took 4 years ago but, unless you've been to Paris since 2006, you shouldn't recognize the place.

Anonyme a dit…

Flocon,
I am not familiar with this location even before 2006. And that is one modern amazing bridge! Paris is like the Louvre: there is so much to be explored and to understand. The more I learn about Paris the more that I understand how little I know about it.

Anonyme a dit…

Flocon,
Do you understand this humor?

Just curious because what I most often have difficulty with in French is understanding certain jokes/humor.

Flocon a dit…

-------

By saying Yeah, right the girl uses two positives which eventually mean something negative which in the end disproves the "teacher"'s statement.

This is what I understand in any case. That's witty and typical of what I'm used to re Anglo/American humor.

The French version of sitting in a tree is Oh la menteuse elle est amoureuse.

I notice the American song (is it also British?) makes fun of both "partners" whereas the French one picks only on the girl (it's a girly song anyway). And I can't understand what the girl says in between the main line.

Oh la menteuse elle est amoureuse.
Yes, you linked to this before one time.

I can't understand what the girl says in between the main line.

It usually goes like this

Henry and Tamara sitting in a tree:
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First comes love,
then comes marriage,
then comes baby in a golden carriage!

That's not it!
That's not all!
The baby's drinking alcohol!

The little girl I linked to, however, gets it somewhat wrong. She says the following:

Piper and Jonah sitting in a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First comes carriage
Then comes marriage
Then Piper in the baby carriage

That's not all
That's not all
