On April 20, 1910 one day after Halley’s Comet brushed Earth Samuel Langhorne Clemens died in Redding, Connecticut of a heart attack.
Regarding Mark Twain one may think it is a case of self realizing prophecy. But since he "predicted" his own death when he already was 74, knowing that the comet would return the year after, he had a fair chance to be right.
Had he predicted his death the way he did but aged 23, that would be more "convincing" methinks.
All the more since the last ten years of his life were emotionally very painful. The man was broken. And dying at the age of 75 wasn't that usual for someone born in 1835.
D'ailleurs dans le texte il est écrit: "there are those who believe Twain predicted his own death." Which means there are others who don't believe he predicted etc.
Funny that you mention Twain today since I refered to him exactly three years ago today in this post where you commented with KD and others...
Three years ago? Another life indeed. Who mentioned parapsychology?
Funny how the Halley comet is the talk of the day since I used an illustration with the comet as guest star (c'est le cas de le dire) for a post I wrote at SF's 5 years ago.
(Plato is quoted)
As for the painting you've just finished I like it very much indeed.
Like in the former one je remarque beaucoup de nuages and also a timeless sensation. I think of prehistoric times when strange birds cross the sky and some sorts of creatures crawl out of the water.
I recognize he same tormented landscape and on the left side of the painting like a heavy rain falling from the bluish cloud above.
The former painting was "dealing" with perspecive whereas this one seems more concerned with circularity.
The river isn't pristine blue on the right side but becomes clearer and clearer until it disappears, maybe because there's a fall we don't see.
I perceive some kind of contrast between the person seemingly lost in his/her thoughts, apparently serene and collected and the somehow perturbing environment the person seems anaware of.
In both paintings the dominant colour is in the same tonality of soft orange and blue.
Flocon, I have a long way to go with the painting. What you saw there I dashed out rather quickly. I used to do a lot of portraits for people, but I tired of doing that after awhile.
Flocon, that's an excellent review of the painting! Xtine also had an excellent review that she sent to my e-mail address. Now with you and Xtine and ZapPow I'm convinced that there are a fair number of French people with a keen eye towards art.
Yes, I do appreciate clouds because we have such interesting cumulous clouds here in the Mesilla Valley. Ane yes, where the water quits indicates a waterfall. The man is indeed serene and lost in his thoughts and the woman is bathing in the water without a care in the world. Xtine also noticed that the boulders represent some type of prehistoric creatures.
The environment can represent a number of things. I see them as having descended from the mountain and they've reached the pool, but they are not yet aware of the rest of what is around them as they are so innocent.
Okay, so I've met some Frenchies, with not so keen an eye.
I have met more Americans than Frenchies.
More Frenchies who I have gotten to know are significantly more interested in the arts and look at it more intently than most Americans I have gotten to know.
That has been my personal experience. Of course the experience of other people will differ.
Our experiences color the way that we feel about life and about others.
Yes, it would mean General Motors is back in business.
The meaning depends on the context. Journalists use this word rather loosely. Rocky redux could mean any number of things depending on the context in which it is used. It could mean that one of the many Rocky movies is being re-released with maybe a few changes. In fact, considering that there was Rocky I, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV and on and on (I'm not sure how many sequels there are), someone could have used redux to mean that all of the sequels were essentially the same movie with minor changes.
Rocky was played by Sylvester Stallone, that Guignols character. Maybe it's too early in the morning for me to think clearly, but I'm not connecting Rocky with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Ah, the Beatles' song is a good example! These different words come in handy for writing as they offer up the opportunity to not repeat the same word (as I did in the above comment with 'context')
I'll never live down having written "quelle horreur!" out of context. ☺
42 years ago? Oh my god! Have I grown older...

Maybe shall I open another Espace détente page when the entries pass over the number of 50 here. Keeping that one open and opening another one (with a different URL) with an updated link on the front page.
I may even change the title from Espace détente to Than kwee salon in the land of enchantment (which has been slightly dormant these last months...) :-D
My first idea was to add a chatbox in the side bar but firstly I haven't even searched for a chatbox device (well it's all a matter of html code but I don't want to be bothered with that).
Secondly I don't find it quite appropriate as soon as the messages are longer than 10 words.
And thirdly chatboxes don't permit real exchanges like a whole page can.

Flocon, I have done this with my own paintings just for fun. This is a very popular form of presenting art these days. One takes ones own art work and photoshops it. I recently attended the opening of a gallery in Las Cruces which featured digital art.
However, I am still old fashioned and I like best a canvas, a brush and some oils.
Out of the 9 pictures to be seen on your link have a look at the 6th (first one, second row on the left, which shows an empty space with 6 paintings hanging).
And after all, also the ones hanging in the back of the room but it's hard to fully see them, isn't it?
I feel these paintings may very well be yours Anijo.
Interesting Flocon. No those aren't my paintings and in fact I didn't even see them. There were too many people elbow to elbow and I ended up leaving before seeing everything as I planned to return when I could look at the artwork peacefully. I'll be sure to check out this room the next time that I go to the gallery.
I've had the curiosity to look on Wiki what it says about the elevation of Mesilla and New-Mexico after you mentioned the snow and the temperature the other day and I was surprised to find out nearly 3.900 ft for Mesilla and 4.000 ft for Las Cruces.
On the Las Cruces article there is a picture of mountains in the back and they look like they're 8.000 ft high.
I had no idea really.
Wheeler Peak is not far from being as high than the Mont Blanc and the mean altitude of N.M is 5.700 ft which definitely qualifies the State as a mountainous one.
I shouldn't have started with that Pierian Spring thingie... it sharpens my thirst.
The Organ Mountains are made up of three major sections:
On the north end is a narrow ridge of vertically-jointed Tertiary granite[2] (more specifically, quartz monzonite) called The Needles. This is the most picturesque section and includes the tallest point in the range, Organ Needle at an elevation of 8,990 feet (2,740 m).
These mountains were the inspiration for the last painting that I showed you (the one with the bathers). It's on the east side of the Organs looking east. There are pools of water up there. In the painting, I combine different aspects of the east side of the organs, including this aspect that you can see in this video that I took about 3 years ago. You might notice the inspiration I had from some of the boulders shown here. At this time of year, there was not so much water in the pools as there is at other times of the year.
Around the Las Cruces/Mesilla area there is an unusual mix of desert, the Rio Grande (river) valley and even pine trees in the Organ Mountains. Of course, there is also prickley pear cactus in the Organ Mts.
What a lovely and enticing voice you have Anijo! You sound like a 15 year old shy and timorous lass!
No wonder men can't resist!
Now that I've heard you I must do something about you hearing me!
At first I thought I'd open an account like you did on YouTube but since it's a Google subsidiary (like is Gmail), each time I want to connect I have to reset my password if I want to return to my own blog or post a comment on Christine's one or other Bloggers' blogs.
Avec les mystères de l'Internet I fear that someday something may go wrong (my paranoid side that is).
I'll try to record some lines and send them to your email adress when I've finished to learn how to record something that is comprehensible...
I remember Dad who posted here three years ago. I've seen his blog is dormant by now.
Strong is definitively not the adjective I'd use. You're whispering in a very, very soft and light British-American accent.
You should be more cautious with that video on YouTube Anijo. Your voice is such a powerfull w.o.m.a.m (weapon of massively attracting men) that some geeks could locate you and tell their buddies where you live.
Mesilla soon could be invaded by thousands of lewd, lusty and flustering men like a flame in the dark attracts luciolas just to burn them out.
Beware and watch out Anijo!
[Is it me (and my tinnitus) or are there hootering trucks to be heard in the "background"?]

Come what may...
To change the words amounts to censorship.
As a matter of fact I haven't read one single opinion favoring this bowdlerized version of the novel. I haven't read all of them either...
I don't know how many hundreds of thousand copies of an edition that will always be regarded by scholars as a fraud.
Also I've met again that verb to bowdlerize which I first read only some weeks ago and, curious as I am, I looked up in my dictionnary only to learn that was the name of a man... Like the one responsible for this new edition.
In the NYT this morning the story of Christina Green who was born on 9/11 and shot dead in the last week Arizona killing.
Dates are human conventions but nevertheless there seems to exist some kind of predestined symbolism in our imagination.

A longtime supporter of parapsychology research, there are those who believe Twain predicted his own death. In 1909 he wrote:
I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley's Comet. Anijo,

Follow up...
Each language has its intricacies who puzzle foreigners...
In French it mut be y et en and de et à
In English there are 6 ways of expressing a certain action:
Get in, Get out
Go in, Go out
Come in, come out
In German they have four ways:
Hinein, hinaus,
Herein, Heraus
whereas in French we have to do with only two possibilities :
Entrez, Sortez.
L'anglais est beaucoup plus précis, hence more difficult to learn for foreigners on some specifical points.
Flocon, you have provided a lot of information for me to digest. What good resources that you have led me to. Thank you.
I have a new painting in the works. For now, it is a rough draft.
link
The title is "Espace Détente Salon". It is a work in progress.
This is a painting that I recently put the final touches on and that you might like Flocon. I have already shared it with Xtine.
Quelle horreur!
"on some specifical point"
Specific of course!!!
----------
The rough draft seems promising Anijo.
I didn't know you also worked on people and perhaps portraits.
For some reason my first thought was that the couple was an ancient Roman one wearing togas.
Here is the photoshoped copy of the draft.
As for the painting you've just finished I like it very much indeed.
Like in the former one je remarque beaucoup de nuages and also a timeless sensation. I think of prehistoric times when strange birds cross the sky and some sorts of creatures crawl out of the water.

I have a long way to go with the painting. What you saw there I dashed out rather quickly.
I used to do a lot of portraits for people, but I tired of doing that after awhile.

No more than a few dozens of people you know... :-D
Ah, so I am lucky enough to have met the keen ones.
Can someone tell me what does "redux" mean.
Can't figure that one out.
And also if there's any difference between someone and somebody, anyone and anybody?
Or is it like perhaps and maybe?
Redux veut dire "du retour".
I don't believe that there's any difference between someone and somebody. Both mean "quelq'un".
Likewise, I am not aware of any difference between anyone and anybody. Both mean "n'importe qui".
Also someone, somebody, anyone and anybody are often interchangeable, but not always...
Ah merci Anijo!
Shortly after I received your answer I went to see what the On line English etymology had to say about it and it gave me the answer.
And since it has a latin flavor in it it kept me thinking of the French réduction.
A further attempt and here I was...
Would G.M redux = General Motors is back?
Or Rocky redux = Schartznegger returns?

I mistook these two subtle and sophisticated actors... ;-)
(*) Ah! that f. pesky little "y" again.
I'll never live down having written "quelle horreur!" out of context. ☺

And the Canadian girl who revisits the paintings.
Merci Flocon. Quand je me lève demain matin, j'aurai plein de choses intérressantes à lire.
Did they dedicate one entire room to your works?
On the Las Cruces article there is a picture of mountains in the back and they look like they're 8.000 ft high.
Those are the Organ Mountains
Flocon,
Ici tu peux m'entendre parler français.
Merci Flocon ☺

btw, how strong is my American accent?
Yes, Dad is like me with his blog...
"how strong is my American accent?"
[Is it me (and my tinnitus) or are there hootering trucks to be heard in the "background"?]
lol Flocon !
[Is it me (and my tinnitus) or are there hootering trucks to be heard in the "background"?]
That's the sound of a distant train.
