With David Thoreau as guest star.

"When you start to become aware of these bogus quotations, you can’t stop finding them. Henry James, George Eliot, Picasso — all of them are being kept alive in popular culture through pithy, cheery sayings they never actually said."

Anonyme a dit…

I believe that one of the quotations you felt was invented was a quotation that I provided from Frank Lloyd Wright.

This interview is the source of that quotation. I didn't bother to answer you at the time, but since your bring it up again..

Flocon a dit…

Hu Ho... Is this another case of misunderstanding?

I never doubted the veracity of the quote by F.L Wright that you provided the other day Anijo.

It's just that I seized the opportunity to raise the more general question of the authenticity of quotes by such and such author.

Alain Peyrefitte (a member of the Académie Française, which shows how rotten the whole thing is) attributed the sentence to Napoleon.

Problem : nobody has ever been capable to find where Bonny wrote or when he said the sentence. Hint : It's an apocryph but it feels so good for the author to seem to be vindicated by a superior mind.

I found it on the French Wiki (and only there) and it took several tries before it was deleted.

The quote by Lévi-Strauss is given its origin because it's one I personally read and I know were to find it.

Tous les sites qui proposent des citations n'indiquent jamais d'où viennent said quotes and it's unprofessional.

Once again, I didn't doubt the veracity of the quote you mentionned petite Américaine.

Anonyme a dit…

lol

Once again, I didn't doubt the veracity of the quote you mentionned petite Américaine.

Ah, je comprends Flocon. ;) .. pardon..

There are a number of quotations that I've later discovered were incorrect. I can'think of any of them right now. After some thought, they might come to mind..

Anonyme a dit…

In the film, Casablanca, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is often quoted as saying, "Play it again, Sam". The actual quote is "Play it once, Sam, for old times' sake, play 'As Time Goes By'."

People often misquote a line in Shakespeare's The Life and Death of King John, Act IV, Scene II, line 13.

What is regularly quoted is ""to gild the lily". The actual quote is "To gild refined gold, to paint the lily."

The entire stanza has a nice ryhthm and sense to it:

To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
To throw a perfume on the violet,
To smooth the ice, or add another hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess.

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

re Play it again sam, do you remember that one where you vehemently came to my rescue?

I confess I was being nasty with Mike. Now it's gone but the first months of the year 2008 weren't cool for me.

You may remember ikki and what a lovely guy he was. In his comment (#81) he asks a question which tells he's much younger than we are.

Also the last comment (#93) if from JPG, a Frenchman who suceeded in getting ZapPow irritated! Oui Madame!!!

But that happened one year before, during the French presidential campaign when JPG was rooting for Sarko because lui seul pouvait "redonner à la France la place qui lui revient dans le peloton de têtes des nations".

For some reason, ZapPow s'est énervé... :-)))

Steinbeck a bien reçu le prix Nobel de littérature or am I mistaken?

Flocon a dit…

I notice it is an association of French bussinessmen living in the US which stands behind the project.

Elle se tient right over the tunnel where Lady Di's car crashed 15 years or so ago. You've probably seen it avec tous les graffiti, les photos, les fleurs etc. qu'y déposent les coeurs sensibles...

Browsing through Wiki, here's another example of the Germans' interest with Native Indians : Here's the German article about the Two Kettles tribe.

Just compare with the English entry... The French entry isn't exactly important but at least there's an entry.

Not to be taken as a definitive evidence of the German interest but yet, it isn't insignificant either.

It may well be a consequence of the Winnetou's effect

Flocon a dit…

Anijo, why aren't you there when Raphael needs you?

Anonyme a dit…

My poor Rafa! ☺

Anonyme a dit…

The Wiki entry for the Tewa (my people) is only translated into English, German, Navajo, Italian and Russian.

The German page is the most complete.

The Navajo page is quite brief and refers to the Tewas as 'Anaashashi' = 'bear foreigners/aliens' ...

The Navajo also indicate that the Tewa are 'Kiis'áanii' = pueblo people. 'Kiis'áanii bikéyah' = Hopi territory. 'Diné Bikeyah' = Navajo territory

Anonyme a dit…

Rafa is kicking his ass. ☺

Flocon,
I was watching this video of comedian Eddie Izzard. At the beginning he says the following:

And the French people came and they stared at me with that look on their eyes of 'quoi'? Because, you know, there's no stand up in France and they're not used to English people speaking French.

and yet..

So it makes me wonder why he said that... ?

Flocon a dit…

"So it makes me wonder why he said that... ?"

Eddie Izzard is part of the international entertainment business and what's more he's a francophone, thefore he perfecty knows there are many stand up comedians in France as there are in all the countries the Wiki article indicates.

Simply I suppose it's part of his show adressing a British audience, mocking the neigbour - even in the slightest possible manner - is always a sure recipe for smile raising.

A Japanese gently mocking the Chinese will receive positive vibes from her audience as well as a Brazilian making fun of the Argentinians.

Hint : What about the cheese-eating-surrender etc...?

It all relies on clichés and prejudice.

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

Don't you know that when they get involved in something the Germans do mean business?

Whether cars, machine tools or encyclopédias, don't mess around with them ;-)

-----------

Funny, these two guys never were comedians mais écrivains et ils n'ont jamais su ce qu'était un stand-up comédien.

I've deleted their names from the list but I've added that of Muriel Robin.

As for Tomer Sisley it's the first time I see his name. J'ai peut-être vu son visage???

Anonyme a dit…

Tomer Sisley.

The Majorcan angel, Rafa, moves on to the final vs Djokovic. Should be a great match!

Flocon a dit…

Here's something that may interest you Ned, with the readers' comments often interesting.

Anonyme a dit…

Hello. And Bye.

Flocon a dit…

Hello above Anonym...

If you want to know how you rate on your What is your world view, take a chance here.

(I'm a post modernist)

Postmodernism is the belief in complete open interpretation. You see the universe as a collection of information with varying ways of putting it together. There is no absolute truth for you; even the most hardened facts are open to interpretation. Meaning relies on context and even the language you use to describe things should be subject to analysis.

Flocon a dit…

Why Ned and Anijo are smarter than the rest of us...

Anonyme a dit…

Anonyme a dit…

Et Ned parles français mieux que moi.

So you should have said, "Why Ned and Flocon are smarter than the rest of us..."

Flocon a dit…

As a matter of fact, I was thinking of a French language test that you and Ned took some four years ago (?) at SF's where both of you were so brillant that Moody's and S.P would have rated you AAA-.

I had a try at said test and miserably failed. I felt humiliated and then I knew you were smarter than me...

Anonyme a dit…

bof...je ne me souviens pas. Methinks you're no doubt being rather generous with you memory of said event.. ;)

Anonyme a dit…

Ned Ludd a dit…

After a break, I see that this thread has been taken up again. Another quote that people get wrong is "God helps those who help themselves". This is not in the Bible but you can always find a Republican dip shit(a pleonasm)to use it. In this case Rep. Joe Barton.

"Bashir: I know you're a long time member of the Methodist Church. Is that correct?
Barton: Yes, sir. That's a true statement.
Bashir: How do you square your approach with the Psalm 146, where the Psalmist writes this: "He gives food to the hungry. The lord protects foreigners. He defends orphans and widows." Isn't this the exact opposite of the cuts being proposed by Republicans in congress?
Barton: No, the lord helps those who helps themselves...
Bashir: Which verse of scripture is that, sir?
Barton: Well, it's uh..
Bashir: I don't think you'll find that in the Old or New Testament.
Barton: Well, that was taught to me by my father who is president of the United Methodist school board in Waco Texas, and Bryan, Texas."

Reading is for Snobs

There is a good link to Wiki about the quote.

Anijo, Oh I love the Mamas and the Papas. I read somewhere that there is no accounting for taste.

Anonyme a dit…

Mr. Barton is a poor student of Scripture.

The Bible is so full of well-known admonitions to help the helpless that it is unnecessary to cite any.

Yet we are at the same time not absolved of personal responsibility for ourselves. For example, a comment down the linked Barton thread quotes 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12.

"...If any one will not work, let him not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work in quietness and to earn their own living."

In my view, God makes us responsible for the helpless. But God gives the lazy no claim on the industrious.

We can, of course, freely choose governments that will transfer assets from the industrious to the lazy. But Scripture does not require us to do this.

SemperFidelis

Flocon a dit…

Synchronicity or what? I've been thinking about the latest post (Some difference though) for a couple of weeks now and it has to do with religion and politics... and no, it won't be particularly acerbic...

In the meantime I leave it to the scholars (Ned and SemperFidelis) the debate re the Gospels and the Bible quotes.

Just, these holly books (The Koran and the Thora included, with the "book of the sun" (whatever) of the Aztec (whatever) are often considered as sets of moral rules whose teaching are to be followed by the letter, whereas they're basically comparable to the legal codes courts all around the world base their conclusions and judgements upon.

It's all a matter of interpretation so the "scientific" reliabilty of these moral laws is very shaky in my opinion.

Theologians have been discussing and debating these issues for some 15, 20 or even 25 thousand years and they stil haven't reached any definitive conclusion.

What's more, theologians of yesteryear are often in complete contradiction with "our" theologians, who themselves will be corrected by the grand-sons of their grand-daughters in, say, 150 years etc.

As Cellequilit's favourite philosopher would say : Let's pretend!

According to Wiki, he was raised in what he himself described as a "very religious milieu" and he eventually fount out that the least bad option was to act "als ob" (as if).

Ned Ludd a dit…

Semper Fidelis, what you cited shows that believers can cherry pick what they want. There are at least two main New Testaments(and other additions), that of the Gospels and that of Paul(known as Pauline), who did not know Jesus personally. His interpretations are second or third hand or simply made up.

As to Thessalonians, there is academic and theological debate about whether Paul wrote the 1st or 2nd. Apparently he could not have written both. It is curious that Paul wrote his stuff before the Gospels were written.

One thing believers tend to ignore is Mathew 10 where Jesus says, "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." The rest of the chapter is as frightening. I guess this is why xians like guns so much. Luke and the non-recognized Thomas wrote about Jesus bringing fire and division.

These are in contradiction with another passage in John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

You can of course consult a clergyman to explain it to you, but he/she has only the same evidence as you, so how can they claim to be more informed? But you can find innumerable sites that try to "explain" seemingly damning texts.

Ned Ludd a dit…

Semper Fidelis, I had another thought about your quote: "...If any one will not work, let him not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work in quietness and to earn their own living."

Maybe that text refers to the money changers that Jesus didn't seem to like so well, and not to the poor or unemployed.

Flocon,
I'm enjoying your selections on the sidebar. Fall Frett has a nice funky sound. And Mary Austin! She writes about the Southwest United States as it was long ago in a sensitive and artistic manner.

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

Fall Frett I had never heard of until ZapPow mentioned the name years ago. As for Mary Austin, pareil. It's just that I came through her page on Wiki and it's very likely I shall never read any of her books for many reasons, the least being that she probably has never been translated into French.

Has she even been translated???

Please note how the article in German about her is 2,5 x the size of the one in English...

(Someone had some fun writing one line in Latin also)

Hmmm... I had to correct a link on the English page about "Taos Pueblo", one of her books. The existing link would lead here but now it leads there.

And it's a Frenchman in Paris who has to do the job! Where's SemperFidelis when the Great Nation needs him???

Flocon a dit…

On second thought I'm not surprised about SemperFidelis's lack of reaction re the wrong link. What else would you expect from a Marxist bent to destroy America?

Anonyme a dit…

That intellectual Frenchman in Paris has an eye for detail and knowledge.

Said Frenchman also has a desire to exchange ideas with a certain American Marine, and does what he can here and there to elicit said exchange.

Anijo, Djokovic was making a comeback before the rain stopped, winning 8 games straight. Unprecedented for Nadal. We'll see today, that is if the rain lets up.

Tennis is so exciting. I was watching and fell asleep, which caused me to miss going to the voting bureau to help count the votes, which I had promised to do. I went and apologized to the woman running the bureau.

Fortunately there are very few voting machines in France.:)

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

I know you're the great priestess of the successful research on the Internet. J'ai fait une petit recherche (well, probably less than 30 seconds) et je n'ai rien trouvé regarding Mary Austin in French. Once again you prove me wrong... :-(

Flocon a dit…

Ned,

Pendant des années j'ai passé des heure à regarder des parties de tennis (an occupation that was detrimental to my blood pressure) and then I switched to sthg else mais c'est vrai que c'est exciting. Is there another sport where the issue of the whole game can be decided at every point?

-----------

I can't stand her. She doesn't need my vote to win anyway. Were it the case, I would go to the polling station.

Anonyme a dit…

Rafa now receiving his trophy. ☺ ☺ ☺

I so enjoy tennis and things French, so it's sad that the French open is now over...

Ned Ludd a dit…

For America, baseball is what I much prefer. In most games, you cannot take the leader's result for granted in the late innings. Suddenly(if there is anything sudden in baseball)the score can change greatly.

George Carlin on baseball:
baseball

In Europe, I like rugby. In the championship, Toulouse played better most of the game but Toulon should and would have won if they hadn't made two big errors in the last couple of minutes. Also, unlike soccer, the players never argue or agress the referee, even when it seems that he made a clear mistake.

Anonyme a dit…

Ned,
Thanks for the link to Carlin's take on baseball. His take on just about anything is humorous.

The only sports I pay attention to are tennis, golf, and sailing.

Not exactly sports, but I also enjoy NASCAR and IndyCar. I'll give credit to Danica Patrick for getting me interested in IndyCar initially. She's moved over to NASCAR now.

Flocon a dit…

Ned,

"unlike soccer, the players never argue or agress the referee, even when it seems that he made a clear mistake."

(Also, have you noticed how your life has changed since you've mastered the fine art of directly refering to sites with blue links?)

Flocon a dit…

Anijo,

as pertains rugby (which I believe is next to non-existent in the States) I suggest you start your initiation to the game with the basics like here, here or here.

They're French rugby players practising zazen. I'll explain the rules of the game later if you're still interested.

And in case you don't believe me, just ask Ned for confirmation.

This pic is irrelevant since it's shows some members of the French National swimming team.

They're ugly too...

Anonyme a dit…

hmmm.. They may be practicing zazen, but seeing these pics calms neither my body nor my mind. Quite handsome and muscular those men are!

Truth be told, though, I find most attractive men with intelligence. This man, for example, I find very sexy.

Flocon a dit…

"I find most attractive men with intelligence".

Yah, yah, yah and blah blah blah.

How many times have I read and heard that line: You know Flocon, you're so handsome and attractive and muscular and well built but I'm more attracted to bright men with sharp intellects... why don't we stay friends instead? .

Yeah sure... grrrrr...

And you tell me it's intelligence that counts...

Ah come on Anijo...

Anonyme a dit…

LOL...okay, okay.. It's like I only buy Playboy for the articles.

I do admit having a weakness for Rafa. But Brian Cox is much much sexier. Seriously.

Ned Ludd a dit…

-Anijo, sorry, I find that your man, Dr. Cox(!) looks too much like a member of a Boys Band.

-Flocon, intelligence matters. Look at Arthur Miller and Woody Allen. Diane Keaton disagreed with an interviewer and said that Woody was sexy.

One thing though, whenever women will tell you that they are not attracted to machos, don't believe it. You need a good percentage of machoisme, which may take different forms, but not overdo it.

I wrote about this once before. There are sayings about "nice guys", like they finish last. I would follow the rule: no more Mister Nice Guy.

Anonyme a dit…

Okay, here he is , the sexiest guy ever

Ned Ludd a dit…

I like the little quotes you put in the sidebar. Here are a couple by American writer Ambrose Bierce, from his Devil's Dictionary.

-Cartesian, adj. Relating to Descartes, a famous philosopher, author of the celebrated dictum, Cognito ero sum--whereby he was pleased to suppose that he demonstrated the reality of human existence. The dictum might be improved, however, thus: Cognito cognito ergo cognito sum--'I think that I think therefore I think that I am'; as close an approach to certainty as any philosopher has yet made.

-Philosophy,n. A route of many roads leading from nowhere to nothing.

:)

Flocon a dit…

"A route of many roads leading from nowhere to nothing."

J'ai aussi parfois ce sentiment que la philosophie is much ado about nothing.

Yet great philosophers have shown new horizons and directions to humanity. Then the question arises: Did humanity need philosophers to discover these new routes or would they have been found without them anyway?

And also, was it for good or did it add to the overall distress of humanity?

Another series of question. On n'en sort pas!

Here is a wonderful French song that she sings (in French). The authour is a French poet of the 13th century. And the composer is no other than one of the greatest French singer, Léo Ferré.

I know these names are familiar to you but said names probably aren't that famous in the vicinity of that place way down the US.

A friend who had a good command of all this stuff rebooted it under Linux and eventually the virus was out.

For years I didn't have any other protection but the ones provided by Windows and I never experienced any other problem.

Depuis quelques mois j'utilise Avast which I've been told is top notch and yesterday there was that attack that went through this antivirus protection program...

So...

En fait je sauvegarde tous les jours mes données de telle façon que je puisse à tout moment réinitialiser l'ordinateur if need be.

Ned Ludd a dit…

Avaste has a very good reputation, but in addition you NEED a firewall: XP has a limited one which I disable to install a better one. You should only have one firewall and one anti-virus installed. I suppose Windows7 has one, but I don't know that system.

I suppose you have set for automatic updates from Windows(if you haven't, do) which in addition to automatic security updates, includes an updated virus checker each month to eliminate any new ones.

My firewall has given alerts about threats before they get installed and I can eliminate them before they enter.

Go to cnet.com or cnet.fr and look up firewalls. Cnet gives good evaluations and the users comments can be helpful.

Ned Ludd a dit…

I should add that a firewall does more than protect against viruses. It protects against hackers entering your machine and stealing, altering, or deleting files, including ones that make your system work, it also prevents them from taking control of your machine to use it, for example, for attacks like denial of service on another site.

Of course a real pro might be able to get around it, but why would they take the effort?

Flocon a dit…

Yesterday's hack bore a fake Gendarmerie Nationale logo and it read:

De fait l'ordi était bloqué, je n'avais plus la main et toutes les touches étaient inopérantes.

Mon "problème" informatique depuis 5 mois vient de la box Darty qui est une bouse dont je ne voulais pas mais parfois il faut accepter l'inacceptable comme disait Hiro-Hito.

I got a good offer from SFR which I took up. I have only had little problems with it, but I don't use the email address they gave me because my mail software tells me it is unprotected.

That is a serious and ridiculous fault by SFR. It would be no big deal for them to install the protection. The same probably goes for your Darty.

There are so many details to watch out for. Your example again tells me that you need a firewall. Also use an online email like gmail or yahoo and an email software like Thunderbird and browser like Firefox or Opera(includes mail) instead of Windows stuff. Google's Chrome is new on the market and I don't know anything about it.

I used Free for years since it started and never had a problem, but I stopped using internet for a couple of years and then got this good offer, otherwise I would probably have gone back to Free, but I can't say how their protection is now.

Ned Ludd a dit…

Let me add that a previous place I worked a few years ago, a grand école, decided to prohibit everyone working there from using Internet Explorer and Outlook for security reasons. The head of the computer service gave required training courses for everyone on using Firefox and Thunderbird. I went though I had used them a long time, and I became friends with the computer guy and go to him for any questions.

Flocon a dit…

You need a firewall!
Use an online email!

Is this Ned's maternal side?

Anyway, I've been using Firefox from the very beginning with my computers and yahoo for my email.
