Moisissure

I have had umpteen debates on the myth of the free market. Here is a blogger that has some good comments on it.

http://bitworking.org/news/289/The-Free-Market-Fairy

"From the true believers of the Free Market Fairy, what is truly evil is that which opposes the Free Market Fairy, and anything that stands in the way gets labeled as "communist", "socialist", or "big government", all appropriately draped in scary quotes.
Stop the Magic

This is, of course, all bullshit. There is nothing benevolent about free markets, they are a natural force, like gravity, and aren't magical, good, or evil. The free market will maximize efficiency and it will do so in a manner that is blind to externalities. Externalities are those costs that aren't factored into the market. For example, the operation of a fossil-fueled industrial economy has the externality of altering the amount of atmospheric carbon-dioxide. Global warming is an externality. So are dead people.

The free market is amoral.

Be clear that is a very different statement from free markets being bad or evil, they're not. Like gravity and electromagnetism, or simple machines like the ramp and the screw, they have no inherent intent, they are tools we use on a daily basis, and the expression of intent is in how we apply those tools. I can use a hammer to drive a nail while building a house, or I can use it to cause bodily harm, in neither case is the morality of the action tied to the tool, and in a similar way the blind action of a free market is free of morality."

- I disagree on the presentation of a couple of points, but overall it states the case succinctly.

Hi ned,

You probably know, but maybe not yet since it's rather ancient but "Le meilleur économiste de France" was how Giscard introduced Raymond Barre to the French when he called him up to be Prime Minister after J.Chirac resigned in 1977.

As for the failed links I have no explanation for that.. Another unsolved mystery of data processing...

Raymond Barre

Proudhon

Thanks for your interesting link.

Flocon,

Here is a song that sums up the political economy in about 7 minutes.

Hello Flocon,

I have no particular liking for de Villiers but his "Puy du Fou" is a real business and a big and successful one at that. He has helped greatly to the economic developpement of his region.

At least Raymond Barre was a competent Minister and a good Mayor, don't you think ?

Hello anonymous,

I knew the "Puy du Fou" would be mentionned in "defense" of De Villiers but as far as I know, he didn't create this event out of his own pocket. It's as Président of the Conseil général de Vendée (or something like that) that he set up this show, not as a private investor.

Like René Monory and his Futuroscope
Not his money but that of the Conseil Général de la Vienne...

As for Raymond Barre, was he a good prime Minister and a good mayor, that is debatable but he never created any company of his own which was the topic of the post.

Since I'm not from Lyon, I can't tell how good a mayor he may have been and as Prime Minister, what is left of his 5 year term???

My feeling is that he managed the everyday day life of the country, period...

Thanks for your comment anyway... :-)
